i have spent the last two weeks reading books by david sedaris. this author was introduced to me by one of my english teachers almost 6 years ago at fsu. at the time i bought one of his books at got extra credit for responding to some of the short essays.
some time ago after finishing this book i decided to buy his others. they have been collecting dust on my vast "to-read" list. two weeks ago the spot light shone on them as i had no idea where to go next in my reading. the short essays provide a sort of instant gratification and a feeling of accomplishment. they go by rather quickly, make me laugh out loud, and before i realize i am done with one book and onto the next.
i would have to say that for people who knit it is like going from a sweater, not knowing where to go next, and moving onto sock or mitten knitting until you figure out what the next step should be. I have not yet learned to knit socks so for me once i finish something troubling i often knit a washcloth or garter stitch scarf. it sort of calms you down and lets you ease into something more grand.
so anyway...as far as david sedaris goes...he is easing me into one of my more substantial endeavors. i have a few series that i have yet to read and the success of finishing his books quickly makes me forget or at least feel better that the next few months will be devoted to a single series, for instance, anne rice's vampire series.
