Well I have been off to a good start for the new year with my knitting. I have cast on a nice shawl with some lovely yarn from my stash. it is the Stormy weather shawlette and I am making it with Fleece Artist Sea Wool. The color is midnight I think but since there is no actual color or color number listed on the tag I have had to guess at the color by looking at pictures on Ravelry. It is a lovely dark shade with charcoal and gray, as well as blue and purple. It is very subtle variegated and not striping in any way, the colors just sort of mesh together. The shawl is simple in the instructions but the finished product looks very well planned and interesting. The shawl was inspired by Elizabeth Zimmerman's pi shawl technique. Since it is modeled after EZ I don't have any purling to do! Unfortunately the sheer amount of stitches makes it where I can only work a couple of rows at a time before my hands start cramping up on me. I am hoping that it is just a cold weather phenomenon.
So I have cast on and been working on this shawl but this past week I have found myself ensconced in quite a fog of knitting aspirations. I aspire to knit lace and cables and have a few patterns already in mind for this. I also wish to make socks and plan to work on that pretty soon. i have a strong urge and will likely follow through on being part of an afghan bloack a month club with my local yarn store, Really Knit Stuff. I want to finish the It's a snap handwarmers that I started last May and then I want to make the Welted Fingerless Mitts from Churchmouse Yarns and Teas. I also want to make the Veyla Mitts and a variety of other things designed by Ysolda Teague. I am also wanting to make a sweater once and for all this year and have already purchased the yarn with which to do it.
Then last night I got the urge to take part in yet another knitting endeavor. It is called the sky scarf and is a conceptual knitting project. In essence, you set out to make a scarf that reflects the weather each day for a year and you use a variety of blue and gray shades to complete it. i first heard of this concept on Facebook. Then last night I randomly happened upon it again while browsing Ravelry. I have decided that I would really like to try and do this since I like blue and gray and love scarves. It will give me a reason to pay attention to the weather and the atmosphere outside each day. I will also be part of a greater community of knitters all taking part in the same project. many of the members of the Ravelry group started their project the first of the year but I did not know about it then. I do not want to knit retroactively either, so my goal is to cast on on Groundhog day. This should give me time to gather the yarn I need because I have no blue or gray yarn despite the fact that I do like those colors and I definitely do not have it in lace or fingering weight. My plan is to order the colors I want from KnitPicks and use yarn from their Palette line.
On another note...I have been enjoying a small mug of tea each day for almost 5 days now. I cannot seem to drink an entire 16oz mug like I used to but I do fish about half of it before it is tepid and nasty. I do enjoy sipping the wonderful hot beverage and am thinking about ordering the pattern kit for the Welted Fingerless Mitts from Churchmouse Yarns and getting some tea with it since I am able to enjoy it again.
Well I guess I will leave off and try and finish reading Apt Pupil and maybe do another two rows on my shawl which I have affectionately named, Storm of the Century.
